Kyon Energy receives approval for 204 MWh battery energy storage system in Brilon, North Rhine-Westphalia

  • The plant provides 102 megawatts  and 204 megawatt hours of storage capacity for the German power grid and the energy transition

Munich, 10.12.2024. Kyon Energy, a leading provider of flexibility solutions in the field of stationary large-scale battery storage based in Munich, is planning to build a new storage facility in Brilon-Nehden, North Rhine-Westphalia. With the approval granted, the project has reached a significant milestone in the expansion of energy storage capacities in the region. The facility will have a storage capacity of 102 megawatts /204 megawatt hours.  Construction of the new storage facility in Brilon is scheduled to begin in summer 2025.

Maintaining grid stability is becoming increasingly challenging as the proportion of renewable energy in the energy system increases. Battery energy storage systems play a key role here, as they can compensate for short-term fluctuations, store surplus energy and feed it back into the grid as required. The planned 2-hour storage system will make a significant contribution to this by using renewable energy efficiently and increasing the flexibility of the energy system. In this way, the project not only helps to stabilize the electricity grid, but also accelerates the transition to a climate-friendly energy supply.

“With the Brilon site, we are creating ideal conditions to make an important contribution to stabilizing the electricity grid in the region's current tense grid situation and to be part of the solution. At the same time, we are promoting the integration of renewable energies and increasing security of supply by building a reliable and flexible energy infrastructure,” explains Florian Antwerpen, Co-Managing Director of Kyon Energy.

Battery storage systems provide flexibly available and cost-efficient electricity - precisely when it is needed most. This makes them indispensable partners for renewable energies and a sustainable energy future.
