This is the first time you've heard of Large battery storage and ask yourself what benefits this will bring to your region? Or have you heard of other municipalities that are currently building a storage facility and would like to find out more about it?
Here you will find in a nutshell the 3 most important reasons for large battery storage in your region.
The biggest advantage of a large battery storage system is exactly what makes it so unique in the energy sector. The ability to switch between drawing electricity from the grid and feeding in stored energy within a few milliseconds, as required.
But why is that so important?
The detailed answer can be found in our article Large-scale battery storage as a key technology for the energy revolution, at this point, a brief summary should be sufficient:
As a result of the conversion from conventional large power plants to volatile renewable energy generation from wind and solar, our power grid is being stressed like never before. With the expansion of renewable energy to many millions of small plants, the share of renewables in the electricity mix is increasing and thus also the dependence of electricity generation on weather, time of day and season. The change in power generation therefore requires extensive flexibilization of the electricity infrastructure so that security of supply can also be ensured in the future.
Large-scale battery storage systems make a decisive contribution to this.
By storing electricity in the meantime, the storage system can absorb excess electricity and feed it back in when demand increases. In this way, it stabilizes both the nationwide and local power grid and increases local supply security. In addition, it simultaneously reduces the need for expansion of high-voltage lines and substations in the region, which would alternatively be necessary to adapt the network to the high number of new, volatile generation plants.
In addition, large-scale battery storage systems are technically capable of providing a wide range of necessary system services. In the event of a power failure in your region (blackout), the storage system can act as a backup system and restore network operation locally (black start).
Kyon Energy is currently actively working to create the regulatory framework for this island and black start capability so that this can also be applied in practice in the near future in an emergency. With the stored energy in a 20 MW large Kyon battery storage system power and 40MWh capacity, the power supply of over 30,000 households could thus be maintained for 2 hours.
Even though the implementation of battery storage projects is essential for the expansion of renewable energy sources, the construction of such a storage system in Germany is by no means a matter of course at the moment. There are currently only around 20 large battery storage systems, each with an output of over 10 megawatts, in operation throughout Germany.
That is why every project that goes online in the next few years will be a real headline. A headline that shows that sustainability and a strong vision of the future are an integral part of the region. Such a project not only improves the perception of the community and the awareness of the region, it also attracts other potential projects such as photovoltaics and wind turbines, draws the attention of potential residents to the community and supports the municipality in meeting municipal climate goals (e.g. climate protection concepts, greenhouse gas neutrality, etc.).
Such a project also increases the energy independence of your region, as renewable sources can be used more effectively, which can reduce dependence on gas imports, for example.
In doing so, your community is helping to realize the vision of a sustainable and independent energy supply.
Part of this vision is also an economic advantage for the region. Energy generation plants are subject to business tax at the place of production. More specifically, 90% of profits are subject to business tax liability in your municipality (see Section 29 (1) No. 2 letter a GewStG).
The exact amount of business tax depends on your municipality's business tax rate and the actual annual gains from battery storage.
In short, why is large-scale battery storage valuable in your community?
1. Kyon large battery storage systems accelerate the restructuring of power grids and thus the transformation to a sustainable and independent energy supply.
2. Decarbonizing the energy sector is an important step towards meeting climate goals. By building a Kyon battery storage system, your community not only actively contributes, but also benefits from the resulting positive press.
3. Through business tax, you participate in the economic success of the project.
